creating unique spaces is our obsession
After having her own baby at the Mater Hospital and becoming involved with the Friends of the Mater Foundation charitable trust, Alexandra Kidd was invited to create the interior spaces for the new Special Care Nursery.
The brief was to create a world-class facility that nurtures babies, as well as parents, in keeping with the well-established Mater ethos. Beyond a selection of hospital-grade paint colours, Alex responded with a concept design and story to create a comforting space for well-deserved parents and babies at an often stressful and emotional time in their lives.
In an Australian first, the facility comprises individual rooms where the Mater’s tiniest patients can be cared for in a personalised nurturing environment, and where parents have access to their baby in a private space.
Alex’s depth of experience in residential interior design influenced her approach to the Special Care Nursery, creating unique spaces that parents can personalise. Carefully selected colours, materials and furniture not often seen in healthcare environments, add to the sense of ‘home’, comfort and security.
